Firefox3 sets world download record. What is Firefox you ask?
| June 20, 2008
In just 5 hours Firefox 3 set the record for most downloads in one day. If you’re asking what the heck Firefox is, you’re missing one great browser. Browsers are the things you view websites with. For Microsoft it’s that ‘e’ symbol. (It’s surprising how many people we are doing web design in Durham for that didn’t know that.) It’s time to expand your horizons. For us web design in Toronto and the GTA just got a little faster! (Insert images of joy). It seems this browser is actually a lot faster than Explorer. The faster we (and you) can download websites for work (well, ok and for personal use) the better. I’m just kicking the tires of this new puppy on the Internet highway we affectionately call the web. Design your own customized Firefox browser with its many plug ins. 25% of people use Firefox and growing. What do they know that you don’t? Have fun, download it check it out.
Update: July 10,2008. See the data on how many people are currently using the new Firefox since launch

Firefox is free and it will work on computers that do not have Microsoft Windows.
What this means for a business shopping for a web site developer is their web site designer should develop the web site with Firefox in mind.
A lot of libraries and other publicly funded internet computers (senior’s centers, non-profit charities, etc.) save money by not buying Microsoft Windows (nor Microsoft Office) and consequently, use Firefox as an internet web browser.
If your website doesn’t ‘look right’ with the Firefox browser, the end user may form the wrong opinion of your business, when it was the web site designer who caused the problem.
I would hope all web designers test all major browsers including Firefox and Safari. Although a small % of people use safari, the iPhone does. It was just launched in Canada recently and using it for a month now, I know the market for this handheld will grow. Last week I was in Pickering for a web design meeting. I had left my iPhone on the table while retrieving something from my car. When I returned the President of the company had it in his hand and asked “is this yours?”. After answering in the affirmative, I was then asked a number of questions and ended up giving a 10 minute presentation. That afternoon he went out and got one.
Before new browsers come out and are adapted, there is usually a Beta version so web designers can test. Typically, well built webstes that have been built to web standards will be ok. Ones that aren’t will be exposed. Business owners are just now starting to take their website and Internet strategy seriously. The days of the kid next door or “dabbler ” are coming to a close. There’s just too much money riding on it.
