Business from your Home or Cottage

Over the last 7 days I’ve had conversations with 3 different people who are in the process or have shut down their offices in order to stop driving and run their operation from home. Why…because they now can. Technology in the last few years had allowed people to operate a business effectively no matter where they are, even the cottage. Satellite broadband is now available for under $400 for the equipment and $54.95 month for service. Companies are setting up central servers and have employees login in from home and work from there. On line meetings are easy. Need to speak immediately? Use new cellphone technology or send a message through MSN. With all the talk of reducing emissions, saving the environment and increasing the quality of life it just makes a lot of sense. Why, because you now can.

What could be better than running your business from your home or cottage? The decrease in stress from no commute can put years on your life. Web conferencing, collaboration and webinars are the key to remote business success. In my business, I choose when my face-to-face occur and arrange all other meetings through a web service that I subscibe to. If more people would jump on this technology there would be so much less polution, traffic and above all, personal STRESS!

Last year I was talking with Bell to reconnect the phone at the cottage.

Bell was asking if I wanted Voice Mail, 3-Way Calling, Call Display, Call Answer, Call Return, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Visual Call Display, High-Speed Internet. My answer was no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, and what? High-Speed Internet available on a cottage phone, that is in the middle of the Northern Ontario bush, with no street address and water-only access? It normally takes Bell all summer just to find the cottage to connect a simple phone.

One week later, I was sitting on the dock at the cottage with my laptop, accessing the Internet through my wireless high-speed connection, and doing work for my clients. The best part of the story, the cottage Internet connection was quicker and more reliable than my connection in Whitby…

Careful for what you wish for, you might just get it.
