The Perfection of Imperfection

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

In this new reality of quickly changing technology, many individuals who are used to perfection are having a tough go of it. My advice to them is to embrace the perfection of imperfection as a coping strategy. For example, when launching a new technology product, many times it is he who is first wins. If you focus on getting the product perfect, the opportunity will simply pass you by. Striving for that last little thing to make it perfect creates undue effort and stress. In fact the last little bit typically only provides a small return. The key is having a good balance.

Business from your Home or Cottage

Over the last 7 days I’ve had conversations with 3 different people who are in the process or have shut down their offices in order to stop driving and run their operation from home. Why…because they now can. Technology in the last few years had allowed people to operate a business effectively no matter where they are, even the cottage. Satellite broadband is now available for under $400 for the equipment and $54.95 month for service. Companies are setting up central servers and have employees login in from home and work from there. On line meetings are easy. Need to speak immediately? Use new cellphone technology or send a message through MSN. With all the talk of reducing emissions, saving the environment and increasing the quality of life it just makes a lot of sense. Why, because you now can.

Website Design and Copy is Like Music and Lyrics

Good music with good lyrics results in a hit. Good website design with good copy also results in a hit, both with visitors and search engines. If you have a Content Management System ensure the copy you write is like an inverted pyramid, with the most important keywords (that your website was optimized for) going at the top. That’s for the benefit of both search engines and your visitors as visitors skim website copy. At the same time, ensure the copy is interesting for your visitor. A professional looking website design that’s easy for search engines and visitors to navigate coupled with well written and optimized copy translates into an effective website that will be a hit.
